Owning a pool can be a rewarding experience, but it also comes with ongoing pool maintenance costs. The peak period for expenses is during summer when the pool sees increased usage and faces environmental challenges.
So you will need to think about three main things.
- Water balancing
- Filtration
- Equipment
When maintaining your pool, two important water balance factors are pH level and oxidation-reduction potential (ORP). The pH level measures acidity or alkalinity and should be between 7 and 7.6 for optimal balance. ORP indicates water quality and chlorine effectiveness, with readings between 650 and 750 mV ideal for proper sanitation. Monitoring and adjusting these factors ensure a safe and enjoyable swimming experience.
Choose the right chlorinator:
The type of chlorinator can affect operating costs. Salt chlorination systems are often more cost-effective in the long run. Systems can cost $3,000-$5,000 for a unit, the more costly models will have ph control or both ph and ORP. The ph function will inject acid stopping the ph from getting high and ORP control means it makes chorine, and monitors the chlorine levels. Avoid tablet feeders as they can be trickier to maintain.
Tablet feeders are the cheaper chlorinators but are tricky to get tuned in, some chorine tablets devolve faster than others making it more of a hassle keeping it topped up, you can also have no chlorinator but this is very labour intensive as you will need to monitor chlorine levels and pop tablets in your skimmer basket.
There are also mineral chlorinator or if you prefer lower chlorine levels in your pool, an ozone system or swim naked chlorinator would be better
Here are some ways to keep costs as low as possible:
Chemical balancing: Maintaining proper chemical balance is crucial throughout the year. Allowing the pool to turn green or develop algae can be costly and time-consuming to rectify. Regularly check and adjust chemical levels to approved standards. Below is a list of the essential chemicals you’ll need for a crystal-clear pool:
- Cyanuric acid (powder form) reduces the chorine breaking down from sunlight
- Sodium bicarbonate (powder form) increases your alkalinity it will also increase ph so do this before tending to ph
- Calcium chloride (flakes/powder form) provides stability to the pool water and helps keeps chemicals working as they should in the pool environment
- Chorine or salt, this depends on what system you are using and is the most used chemical in your pool
- Hydrochloric acid (liquid form) is a dangerous chemical, handle it with care, and use protective equipment, this will lower the ph of your pool.
Please beware of the dangers of mixing and storage chemicals, as improper or poor handling can result in fires explosions or damage to persons or property.
Bulk chemical purchases: Buying pool chemicals in bulk and opting for basic forms of chemicals can save money. Consider purchasing from reputable suppliers known for cost-effective options. HamChem is where we buy ours.
Variable speed pumps: Investing in a variable speed pump may initially cost more, but it can significantly reduce electricity consumption compared to standard pumps. Adjust pump run times and speed based on season, temperature, pool volume, and surface area.
Energy-efficient heating options: Heat pumps are a convenient option for heating and cooling the pool. 3-phase heat pumps are more cost-effective than single-phase, though they require a higher setup cost. Consider using a pool cover to retain heat and reduce evaporation.
Solar heating: Solar heating can be a good alternative to heat pumps, but it’s weather-dependent. Adding a controller can help regulate temperature and save costs.
Pool covers: Pool covers are highly beneficial for cost reduction. They minimize water evaporation, keep the pool warmer, and reduce chemical consumption. Even indoor pools can benefit from covers.
Regular maintenance: Performing routine maintenance, such as cleaning filters, checking for leaks, and inspecting equipment, can prevent costly issues in the long run.
Water conservation: Implement water-saving measures, such as minimizing splashing and using a pool cover, to reduce overall water consumption.
By following these cost-saving tips, pool owners can enjoy their pool during the summer without breaking the bank on maintenance expenses. Regular upkeep and responsible chemical management will ensure the pool remains an enjoyable and economical investment.
